Ariana Grande, the pop sensation known for her powerhouse vocals and chart-topping hits, has also been a vocal advocate for various social and environmental causes. One area that has garnered attention is her dietary choices, specifically her veganism.
Ariana Grande has been vegan since at least 2013, when she announced her decision on social media, describing it as a “joyous day.”
Although personal health initially motivated Grande to go vegan, she admitted in an interview that her love for animals was equally compelling. “I love animals more than I love most people, not kidding,” she told The Mirror.
“But I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-around happier person.”
In an interview with V Magazine published in 2014, Grande further divulged that vegan documentary Forks Over Knives motivated her to go vegan. “Ultimately, no one wants cow tits put in their food, do they?” she told the outlet.
Grande maintains that her decision to go vegan was “never about being skinnier,” after losing weight following a whole-food, plant-based diet.
“The reason why I lost so much weight as I did is because I used to live on junk food. So, I drastically changed my eating habits, started exercising daily, and I’m all around a healthier me,” she explained.
She revealed that a vegan diet also helped stabilize her blood sugar levels.
“The way I’m eating now has actually helped even out my blood sugar,” reported Women’s Health.
“As some of you guys may know, I’ve struggled with awful hypoglycemia for my whole life and it’s improved a ton since I changed my eating habits.”
In 2019, she co-founded Orange Twins Rescue in Los Angeles, California, dedicating efforts to animal rescue and rehabilitation. Additionally, in 2022, she launched an entirely vegan beauty line named “God is a Woman,” inspired by her popular fragrance of the same name.
Despite her Italian heritage, Ariana Grande doesn’t frequently indulge in traditional Italian cuisine. In an interview with The Mirror, Grande shared, “I don’t eat a lot of Italian things, because I’m vegan. I was raised on meat and cheese, so I’ve had enough for anyone’s normal lifespan.” Although proud of her roots, her vegan lifestyle limits her consumption of Italian staples.
According to Grande’s trainer, Harley Pasternak, the pop star prefers Japanese cuisine. Speaking to Glamour in 2015, Pasternak revealed, “Ariana Grande, she’s vegan, and she loves daikon, lotus, adzuki beans—almost like a macrobiotic Japanese [diet].”
During her recent appearance on “Hot Ones” on August 8 (Thursday), where the conversation spanned her life, career, and more, Ariana Grande and host Sean Evans briefly delved into how her vegan lifestyle integrates with her Sicilian American heritage. In one segment, Evans asked Grande, known for her Italian American roots, if she had discovered the “perfect Venn diagram” between veganism and traditional Sicilian cooking.
Grande responded with a light-hearted comment about her family’s forgetfulness regarding her diet, saying, “they don’t want to remember.” She humorously added, “It’s so funny. My Nonna always offers me meatballs and I’m like ‘No thank you, I’m still plant-based, I’m sorry, thank you.’ But, you know, it is what it is. I’m not alone, my brother-in-law Hale is also vegan so we have each other.”
Grande is a passionate advocate for animal welfare, having reportedly adopted at least 10 rescue dogs.
