“This is a really amazing opportunity for a film about veganism and animal rights to win the most prestigious award of its kind, and together we can make it happen!”
Vegan activist Earthling ED’s short film MILK has been nominated for the acclaimed annual Webby Awards.
It has been nominated in the highly competitive category ‘Video: Animation’ —and is up against films such as ‘A Flammable Planet’, ‘Only a Child’, and ‘Public Enemy – Lost At Birth’, among others.
Ed’s film, like every other nominee, is eligible to win two awards: the Webby Award, selected by the Academy, and the Webby People’s Voice Award, voted on by the online community.
The Webby Awards
The awards, established in 1996, have been called the “Oscars of the Internet.”
The annual program honours excellence in internet content and creativity. It is not only a celebration of digital innovation and creativity but also an opportunity to recognize the individuals and organisations that contribute to the evolution of the internet.
The 27th Annual Webby Award nominations have been announced by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences (IADAS).
MILK
Earthling Ed’s nominated film, MILK, documents the life of a typical “dairy cow” and presents some hard-hitting facts about the dairy industry.
It captures the reality of the dairy industry from the perspective of a mother. The video begins with a seemingly ordinary scene: someone pouring milk over their cereal. Shortly after, we’re taken to a heartwarming moment on a British farm, where a mother cow lovingly nuzzles her calf. But this tender moment takes a dark turn as a farmer swiftly separates the two, leaving the cow crying out in agony.
We witness the helpless calf being confined to a small cage, surrounded by others, and fed milk replacer instead of its mother’s nurturing milk. Meanwhile, the mother cow endures the process of being milked by machines and eventually meets her tragic end at the slaughterhouse. Just before her life is taken, she relives the memory of being close to her baby.
The scene returns to the person eating their cereal, now confronting a chilling revelation: their milk has turned to blood. With a bold and grim statement, the video exposes the harsh reality of the dairy industry – “If the colour of milk reflected the dairy industry, it would run red, not white.”
‘We can make it happen’
Following the announcement, Earthling Ed, understandably thrilled at the nomination wrote on Instagram: “The Webby Awards have been called the “Oscars of the Internet,” and it’s fantastic that a film with a strong vegan message has been officially nominated.
“But as well as a nomination, this is a really amazing opportunity for a film about veganism and animal rights to win the most prestigious award of its kind, and together we can make it happen!”
