“We want to offer more plant-based alternatives with a lower climate impact. Choosing plant-based food often impacts climate footprint less than animal-based options.”

Vegans in Europe will be delighted to learn that they can soon enjoy plant-based versions of Ikea’s iconic hot dogs.

The brand has developed its new recipe in a modern way with ‘great taste and texture’ that mimics the original animal-based hot dog, which has been offered for over 40 years.

The meat-free version is said to have a “characteristic sausage flavour” and is made from rice protein, onion, apple, salt, pepper, and smoky seasoning.

Ikea already offers another vegan hot dog made from vegetables, however, that does not imitate its meat counterpart.

“We have spent much time in the development process to give the best experience for our customers. With a great taste, texture, and a snap when you bite it, the plant-based hot dog is a perfect alternative to a traditional iconic hot dog,” Helene von Reis, food manager at IKEA of Sweden said.

Ikea’s sustainability efforts

Ikea will launch the new plant-based hot dog locally in Europe this summer at affordable prices to entice more people to choose plant-based options.

“We want to offer more plant-based alternatives with a lower climate impact. Choosing plant-based food often impacts climate footprint less than animal-based options”, von Reis added.

The Swedish retailer Ikea has been making concentrated efforts to reduce its carbon footprint in recent years.

In its 2022 Sustainability Report, Ikea announced plans to “remove or replace” dairy to further its goals of becoming a climate-positive business by 2030.

The brand already serves dairy-free, vegan soft-serve ice creams in several stores across the world.

The report’s food section spoke about the ecological implications of animal-based products. Ikea noted that its introduction of eco-friendly plant-based options – such as vegan meatballs and hotdogs – had been well-received by customers.

“The climate footprint of plant-based food is often lower compared to animal-based options,” the report said.

“A plant-based diet with high nutritional value can also be a healthier choice.”
