Greggs just launched its new vegan Mexican chicken-free bake

Greggs is continuing to grow its best-selling vegan range

Greggs has expanded its vegan offerings with a new vegan Mexican Chicken-Free Bake.

The limited-edition release follows the launch of four new vegan menu items during Veganuary.

The Vegan Mexican Chicken-Free Bake (£1.90) features THIS vegan chicken-free pieces paired with a mixture of vegetables. The ingredients are coated in zesty Mexican tomato sauce, baked within a crispy pastry crust, and topped with a cheesy crumb.

Vegan options at Greggs

The UK bakery chain has come a long way with its vegan offerings since its Vegan Sausage Roll launch in 2019.

The Quorn-filled product caused mass hysteria on release and was so popular that Greggs struggled to keep up with overwhelming demand.

That year, sales at Greggs increased by 14.7%.

The iconic roll remains a menu staple, but the chain frequently tests new vegan products and regularly swaps them for different options.

For instance, it discontinued its Vegan Steak Bake in July 2021 after first introducing it in January 2020.  

It currently offers a Vegan Sausage, Bean, & Cheeze Melt, a Vegan Sausage Breakfast Roll, and a Vegan Ham & Cheeze Baguette with Quorn. It also has a Glazed Ring Doughnut, Sweet Potato and Onion Bhaji Rice Box, and Southern Fried Potato Wedges on its menu.

For Veganuary this year, it added two sandwiches, a soup, and chicken goujons to its growing list of plant-based options.

Online reaction

While Greggs’ vegan options are often received with much fanfare, the new vegan Mexican Chicken-Free Bake has divided opinions online.

“Please stop making vegan things; they are horrible and taste like cardboard,” wrote one user.

Another added: “Why not just vegetable? I’m a vegetarian and don’t like fake chicken?”

A third ranting on the lack of glut3en options commented: “Actually disappointed to see yet another vegan option – which is great for vegans who chose that lifestyle – but still nothing of note for gluten free options – which is almost always a dietary requirement by necessity rather than choice.”

However others approved.

“It’s a vegan Mexican ‘chicken’ bake. I’m not vegan but I’m here for it,” wrote one excited fan.

“Sampled yesterday. The best vegan bake yet!! Very very tasty and I’m not vegan,” another added.

“Had one at work today, incredible 10/10,“ a third commented.
