For some people, traditional tofu is off the menu due to allergies or simple taste preferences. But hang-on, have you tried the alternative version called Hemp tofu?  Or are you wondering if it’s worth the hype?

What is hemp tofu?

Also known as Hemp-fu and Hefu, hemp tofu is simply tofu made from hemp seeds instead of soybeans.

This food item is being touted as a new super-food for vegans because of the advantages it offers over soya.

Hemp tofu has been raved about particularly by people who have allergic reactions to soy.

Hemp tofu is heavier than tofu and is slightly grainier than its contemporary.

Is it healthy?

Hemp tofu packs in an impressive nutritional profile. It is:

  • High in protein
  • Rich in Omega-3s
  • Enriched with vitamin E and iron
  • Organic and non-GMO

What does it taste like and how do you cook it?

Hemp tofu has a nutty, crumbly taste which is not renowned for being particularly delicious alone, but that’s where vegan cooking skills come into play.

Hemp tofu soaks up flavour in a similar way to soy tofu, and is a great high-protein addition to a delicious and nutritious vegan meal.

What dishes is it good in?

Hempfu is more like a cross between tofu and tempeh, and can be doused in a variety of sauces or simply fried in oil. Its crumbly nature works well in scrambles, stir fries, and tacos.

How is it made?

Hemp tofu brands can be found in supermarket aisles, but it’s fairly easy to make at home too:

  • Prepare hemp milk by blending hemp seeds with water for one minute at high speed.
  • Allow the hemp milk to simmer in a pot and partially cover it to bring it to a boil.
  • It begins to curdle as it boils so turn the heat down to medium-low once it reaches a low boil and let it cook for four minutes. Make sure you stir it constantly.
  • Although, it is optional, you can add a coagulant (dissolved in warm water) at this point to get a lesser crumbly end product.
  • Turn off the fire and add half the coagulant solution stirring briskly for a few seconds once the temperature drops to 155F.  Add the remaining solution once the liquid gets viscous, stir it gently a few times and let sit for 15 minutes.
  • Strain all the liquid out and fashion the curd-ball left in the cloth into a tofu (use your imagination to get the right shape). Then unmold the hemp tofu and enjoy!
