Heck Foods currently produces over 90,000 sausages suitable for vegans daily.
Bedale-based HECK! Food has been selected to feature on a special vegan edition of BBC Inside the Factory programme.
The show follows presenter Gregg Wallace’s factory tours across the world. In the upcoming episode on Tuesday (25 April), Wallace will be taken through the process of creating delicious vegan sausages by HECK!’s very own sausage scientist, Calum Smith.
Vegan sausage production
This will be Wallace’s second visit to HECK! HQ. In 2018, he visited the factory to see the famous 97% sausages being made.
This time Wallace unearthed some secrets on how to get the best bite for a vegan sausage, using ground-breaking seaweed science.
He also got the chance to harvest newly grown crops from the vertical farm of HECK! which uses advanced technology and techniques to cultivate various kinds of leafy vegetables ensuring a minimal carbon footprint.
According to the company, this type of vegetable production reduces air miles and water use while still allowing vegetables to be grown without fertilizers.
“It was great to see Gregg again,” Smith said.
“We work hard to get every aspect of the sausage perfect in every way and our “bite” test is effectively a really scientific way to check the expected snap the sausage delivers.”
Heck! Foods UK
The Yorkshire sausage company was founded in 2013 to create delicious sausages made with high-quality ingredients and free from artificial additives.
Over time, the Bedale company has expanded its product range to include vegan options in response to the growing demand for plant-based alternatives.
The vegan products of Heck! are made from a range of plant-based ingredients, such as sweet potato, beetroot, carrots and mushrooms encased in a seaweed-based coating.
It currently produces over 90,000 sausages suitable for vegans daily.
Tune in to BBC TV 2 on Tuesday, 25 April to catch the airing of BBC Inside The Factory. It will also be replayed on 29 April and can be accessed on BBC iPlayer afterwards.
