Study Finds, Older Adults On Plant-Based Diets Require 58% Fewer Medications Than Meat Eaters | Totally Vegan Buzz

Recent research highlights the significant benefits of a vegan diet for older adults, particularly in reducing medication use. A prominent study in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine found that seniors adhering to a plant-based diet require 58% fewer medications compared to their counterparts who consume meat.

The research conducted at Loma Linda University involved 328 participants aged 60 and above, between 2015 and 2016. Through detailed questionnaires and measurements, the study unveiled that not only do vegans take fewer medications, but vegetarians also showed a reduced medication intake compared to meat-eaters. This reduction is significant even after adjusting for factors such as age, body mass index, and the presence of disease.

One of the primary concerns in geriatric medicine is polypharmacy—the consumption of five or more different medications—which carries the risk of adverse drug events. The higher the number of medications, the greater the risk of negative interactions and potential side effects, which can severely impact an individual’s quality of life.

The authors note that polypharmacy “[carries] an 88% higher risk of adverse drug events as well as higher mortality rates.”

“We hypothesized that a plant-based diet and healthy lifestyle choices decreases morbidities and number of medications taken,” the researchers stated, underscoring the potential of dietary choices to impact overall health profoundly.

Furthermore, they explained, “Increased fiber intake and lower intakes of saturated fat associated with vegan diets improve blood sugar, blood pressure, weight, cholesterol, and other health outcomes linked to better health.” This comprehensive improvement in vital health markers underscores the direct benefits of adopting a plant-based diet.

“Our results show that eating healthy, especially a vegan diet, may be protective in leading to a reduced number of pills taken, either by preventing the development of risk factors and/or cardiovascular disease or by helping on the controlling of such conditions,” the authors concluded.

Moreover, the benefits of a plant-based diet extend beyond just reducing medication. Other studies corroborate the health advantages, including a lower risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular issues and type 2 diabetes. For instance, a separate study published in the Journal of Urology found a plant-based diet to be effective in lowering the risk of prostate cancer in men under 65. Additionally, research in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition by Stanford University indicated that substituting meat with plant-based alternatives could significantly lower LDL cholesterol levels.

For women experiencing menopause, a vegan diet enriched with soy could also prove beneficial. Research by the North American Menopause Society published in the Menopause journal revealed that such a diet can reduce severe hot flashes by 84%. These dietary choices help in managing symptoms associated with menopause more effectively.

The positive impacts on gut health cannot be overlooked. A study highlighted in the journal Foods found that plant-based meats enhance the levels of butyrate-producing bacteria in the gut. Butyrate is a fatty acid that promotes digestive health and reduces inflammation, which is crucial for preventing various diseases.

The compelling evidence from these studies underscores the holistic benefits of a plant-based diet, particularly for the elderly population. By reducing the need for medications and lowering the risk of several health issues, a vegan diet not only enhances longevity but also improves the quality of life for seniors.

As the global population ages, the implications of these findings are profound. Transitioning to a vegan diet can be a key factor in health maintenance and disease prevention, making it a worthwhile consideration for older adults aiming for a healthier, more vibrant life.
