The makers of the new Batwoman series have revealed the superhero’s character will mirror the life of vegan actress Ruby Rose.
Producers Caroline Dries and Sarah Schechter said in a recent panel discussion they plan to honour the vegan actress’ real-life personality.
“Representation is everything and diversity is our strength,” Schechter said. “We love this character and we love her sexuality and we love her beyond her sexuality.”
Ruby Rose’s new depiction of Kate Kane will see the first ever openly gay superhero, also reflecting the actress.
“We’re really proud of being able to have an out lesbian woman front and center of these shows,” Schechter added.
Military
A pilot episode of the series shows Kane discharged from the military after her relationship with Sophie Moore is discovered.
The scene is a reference to the 90s US military policy of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’.
“When I thought about all of the people that were separated from their partners or were kicked out of the military, who had done these amazing things and fought for the country and risked their lives and then, over something as simple as who they loved, were separated or booted out, I immediately was, like, there’s a lot of weight on this scene,” Rose said.
The actress also said she felt ‘bullet-proof’ when she first put on the iconic Batwoman suit.
“I feel like there’s a lot of pressure on kids and that’s why making this show is so important…We want young people to watch this and relate to the people they’re watching on the screen and hopefully be empowered by that,” she added.
Batwoman will debut on CW on October 6.
