They’re Trying To Kill Us documentary spotlights that ‘poisonous diets’ are ‘the single biggest threat to Americans of color’.
Billie Eilish and Chris Paul are executive producers of a new vegan documentary that exposes the racial inequality in the American food system.
The film called They’re Trying to Kill Us has been co-directed by John Lewis and Keegan Kuhn – the man behind films like Cowspiracy, What The Health and Running For Good.
It highlights the link between diet, disease, poverty, food deserts, and government corruption.
Moreover, it blows the lid off the racist health care system in America today and spotlights that ‘poisonous diets’ are ‘the single biggest threat to Americans of color’.
Inequality epidemic
According to the film’s Instagram page: “Lack of access to healthy, nutritious food is an epidemic in communities of color in this country.
“Minorities in America often don’t have a single grocery store within miles of where they live.”
Additionally, the film attempts to seek answers from experts on why the Black American community is more sick than its white counterpart.
For instance, the film highlights that while 10% of the American population have diabetes, in Black communities that number is 20%. Moreover, people of color are dying three times the rate of white Americans from the coronavirus.
The documentary also features interviews with notable leaders and influencers from the fields of Hip Hop, medicine, sports, entertainment, policy, and politics including Ne-Yo, Derrick Morgan, MYA, Wu-Tang Clan’s Mathematics, Lola Monroe, Dr Rosa Kincaid MD, Dr Ruby Lathon, PhD, Senator Brian Williams, Chef Babette and more.
All of them weigh in their own insights of how food deserts disproportionately impact communities of color.
Time to ‘take action’
“I want people to see this film,” said Eilish in a statement.
“It is so important to help all of us understand the depth of the issue, and that we must all take action to change the food system.”
Paul added: “The film opened my eyes to the larger underlying issue and disparities in the food system, and most people don’t realize it has been happening for decades.
“The conversations and dialogue are both thought-provoking and education in so many areas.”
Release details
They’re Trying To Kill Us will debut on 11 November and will be available to watch exclusively on the film’s official website.
The filmmakers have decided on a “Cooperative Release” by giving documentary participants and select influencers unique access to the film’s purchase page in order to split the profits 50/50 for the first week of release. Moreover, the first $1,000,000 raised by the film will go directly to charity.
