‘Our recipe has the perfect ratio of seasoned vegan sausage to flaky pastry. We can’t wait to hear what people think.’

Birds Eye has unveiled its first fully vegan, meat-free sausage roll to mark National Sausage Roll Day on Friday, 5th June.

The new rolls are an addition to the brand’s Green Cuisine collection.

The rolls are made from a delicious seasoned pea protein filling encased in a flaky puff pastry, with tastes and textures replicated to mimic the much-loved traditional Birds Eye Homebake frozen sausage rolls.

The four-pack of Birds Eye’s Meat Free Sausage Rolls is currently priced at just £1.50 or 38p per sausage roll and available in all Sainsbury’s stores nationwide.

Senior Brand Manager at Birds Eye Anne-Marie Gayer said: “We know that sausage rolls are one of the nation’s favourites snacks, so we wanted to create a meat-free version that perfectly replicates the taste and texture of high-street outlets, but with the convenience of being able to cook at home straight from the freezer.

“As the pastry is only cooked once, it results in a lighter and flakier pastry compared to just warming through a chilled sausage roll.

“We’ve also ensured that our recipe has the perfect ratio of seasoned vegan sausage to flaky pastry. We can’t wait to hear what people think.”

Birds Eye also has its new Meat Free Chicken Pie made with pea protein, vegetables and gravy available in stores.

Competition

Birds Eye new plant-based products come at a time when Greggs and other high street retailers have shut operations during the pandemic and the brand hopes to cater to those who ‘have been struggling to get hold of their beloved meat-free snack’.

Inspired by Gregg’s success, many other food brands  including Marks & Spencer, Aldi and Ginsters and Walls have also launched their own versions of rolls and vegan steak bakes.

Last month, Supermarket Aldi expanded its vegan range with a new Plant Menu No Steak Bake launch similar to Greggs launch of its version in January.

Announcing the new product at the time, the retailer said: “In an Aldi first, the supermarket is bringing the infamous bakery shop favourite- the vegan steak bake- to stores near you.”

“The end result is so delicious; you definitely won’t miss the real thing.”
