“Telfar have redefined what luxury means and, in an era where true luxury is having a functioning health and social security system, I think their slogan – ‘Not for you, for everyone’ – rings very true.”
Black-owned fashion label Telfar has been honoured with a fashion award for its vegan-leather, gender neutral shopping bag.
The brand created by Telfar Clemens and Babak Radboy, scooped the Fashion Design of 2020 award from London’s Design Museum.
The Telfar Shopping Bag, is dubbed the “The Bushwick Birkin” to signify its mass appeal and has been branded by many as the accessory of the decade.
Shopping bag
The award-winning shopping bag is a simple, boxy carryall available in an array of colours and comes in three sizes.
It features a double strap (handles and cross-body straps), embossed logo, a main compartment with magnetic snap closure and internal zipper pocket.
The bag is made from faux leather and twill lining and comes packaged in a 100% cotton drawstring bag with screen-printed logo.
The coveted bag that redefines ‘affordable luxury’ retails between $150 and $ 257, resulting in stock selling out online in minutes.
‘Not for you, for everyone’
Speaking of Telfar’s win, Emily King, guest curator at the Design Museum, said: “Telfar is a firm who have managed to really redefine the relationship between themselves and their customers, so much so that owning a Telfar bag is not just owning a brilliant product, it’s about making a vote for things to be done differently.
“Telfar have redefined what luxury means and, in an era where true luxury is having a functioning health and social security system, I think their slogan – ‘Not for you, for everyone’ – rings very true.”
