“This is a significant step forward toward building a more humane and sustainable world.”

Luxury clothing brand Canada Goose has announced it will stop buying fur by the end of 2021.

It will also stop manufacturing with it by the end of 2022.

The decision comes after years of campaigning by PETA and other animal rights activists around the globe.

A slew of celebrities and an online petition saw over 500,000 people join calls to urge the Canadian firm – which has been infamous for selling garments trimmed with coyote fur from animals caught in cruel leg-hold traps – to remove the cruelly sourced fabric from its jackets and coats.

Fur-free future

Chief Executive Dani Reiss said: “Our focus has always been on making products that deliver exceptional quality, protection from the elements, and perform the way consumers need them to.

“This decision transforms how we will continue to do just that.”

The company has also upped its sustainability game by launching eco-friendly garments such as the Standard Expedition Parka, which generates 30% less carbon and requires 65% less water during production. The new lightweight down jackets called the Cypress and Crofton are made with recycled nylon.

‘Humane and sustainable world’

Responding to the news, Humane Canada CEO, Barbara Cartwright said: “This is a significant step forward toward building a more humane and sustainable world.

“We applaud Canada Goose’ decision and their leadership in the industry”, regarding this important announcement.”

Following the announcement, PETA, which has been campaigning the brand to stop using fur for 15 years said: “PETA and its affiliates are suspending their international campaigns against Canada Goose today, after years of eye-catching protests, hard-hitting exposés, celebrity actions, and legal battles, as the company has finally conceded and will stop using fur – sparing sensitive, intelligent, coyotes from being caught and killed in barbaric steel traps.”

Fur free brands

The outwear company joins a number of other apparel and fashion companies that have taken steps to end fur sales, including Macy’s, Nordstrom, and brands like Gucci and Michael Kors.

However, its website says it will continue using natural down in jackets.

To this PETA responded saying it will “now re-engage the company to push for an end to its use of feathers, which geese and ducks continue to suffer for.”
