‘Ideal for vegans, vegetarians or flexitarians who are craving a quick meal.’
Fray Bentos unveiled its limited-edition vegan steak and kidney pie last year and even scooped the top prize in the Vegan Pie of The Year category at PETA’s Vegan Food Awards 2019.
The company has now decided to add the tinned pie permanently to its vegan range after launching its first vegetarian Balti pie in 2018.
PETA is said to have helped the 140-year-old company in developing the new vegan tinned pie, which is packed with a “perfect filling of vegan tofu ‘steak’, kidney beans and vegan gravy” and is topped with a light vegan puff pastry.
“PETA was delighted that an iconic brand like Fray Bentos has brought this innovative vegan steak and kidney bean pie to the table,” Dawn Carr, Director of Vegan Corporate Projects, PETA told Vegan Food & Living at the time.
“We’re confident it will be a huge hit with the skyrocketing numbers of vegans and flexitarians around the UK.”
The new vegan pie is priced at £2 and will be available exclusively at Tesco from the 6th April
Describing the pie a Fray Bentos spokesperson told The Scotsman: “Ideal for vegans, vegetarians or flexitarians who are craving a quick meal, the new Vegan Steak & Kidney Bean Pie is ready to serve in just 25 minutes.”
