A recent survey on eating habits in the US indicated that nearly half of adults choose plant-based alternatives in place of meat and milk.
A new survey by consulting agency Cultivate Insights found a rise in veganism, as 48 percent of adult participants said they had ditched meat and dairy meals for plant-based alternatives between April 2019 and July 2019.
A total of 2,068 individuals aged 18 and older were interviewed. Of them, 38 percent bought plant-based milk, 29 percent bought plant-based meat, and seven percent bought plant-based eggs during the survey period.
Survey results showed that the younger population aged between 18 to 25 years is embracing a plant-based lifestyle, as 47% reported eating meatless meals.
Baby Boomers also demonstrated a shift in eating habits. 41% of women in Generation X indicated they bought plant-based alternatives whereas 28% of men from the same category indicated they had purchased plant-based products.
Common in all demographics
Che Green, the lead report author of Cultivate Insights said: “Plant-based buying has become common in all major demographic groups.
“Part-time vegetarians are helping shape a new food system driven by health, sustainability, and animal welfare.”
The survey also showed participants profiles of 15 major plant-based brands and respondents were able to identify six out of the 15 leading plant-based brands.
Green said: “When it comes to plant-based foods, the rising tide is lifting all brands.
“From industry pioneers to new companies, the data indicates that all of the brands in the survey are benefiting from a rapidly growing market.”
The survey supports previous research indicating changing consumer habits. In a recent report submitted by Acumen Research and Consulting, the global vegan food market is estimated to be worth US$ 24.3 billion by 2026 and the vegan sector’s compound annual growth rate is expected to be around 9.1 % from 2019-2026.
