Jane Fonda blasts Biden for failing to take ‘bold or fast’ action on climate crisis

“We’re up against time. The scientists say we have less than nine years to cut our emissions in half.”

American actress and environmentalist Jane Fonda has blasted POTUS Joe Biden for not being ‘bold’ or ‘fast’ enough to tackle the climate crisis.

The celebrity made the comments to call out the Biden administration for not taking action to halt the Line 3 oil pipeline construction in Northern Minnesota.

The Enbridge Line 3 replacement project – a proposed pipeline expansion to bring nearly a million barrels of tar sands per day from Alberta, Canada to Superior, Wisconsin – was approved by former President Donald Trump during his last days in office.

Fonda joined thousands of people in northern Minnesota over the weekend protesting against the construction of the new oil pipeline.

In a post to her Instagram, the liberal activist wrote: “This pipeline is wrong. Just wrong. And the Biden administration has the power to pull the permits and demand that the Army Corp of Engineers does a proper study.”

‘We’re up against time’

According to protestors, Line 3 has been given the green light despite a lack of sufficient environmental review and would contribute more to climate change than Minnesota’s entire economy.

In addition, Line 3 would violate the treaty rights of the Anishinaabe people, who harvest wild rice, hunt, fish, gather medicinal plants in the lands and watersheds Line 3 seeks to cross.

In an interview with CNN’s New Day, Fonda said: “Well, it’s nice to be hopeful again, and it’s much better to push a moderate than to fight a fascist, right?

“We’re very, very grateful for what he’s [Biden] been doing. He’s done a lot of very good things. But not enough, not bold enough, and not fast enough.

“We’re up against time. The scientists say we have less than nine years to cut our emissions in half.”

She added: “Line 3 is going in the absolute opposite direction, and the news every day is telling us, emissions are going up, not down.

“So we have to put our bodies on the line and do whatever we can to get our administration to call a halt to these permits.”

‘Line 3 is a climate time bomb’

Earlier this year, over 350 groups delivered a letter urging Biden to stop the Line 3 Pipeline in a bid to protect waterbodies, indigenous rights, and our global climate.

One of the signatories, Winona LaDuke, Executive Director of Honor the Earth, said: “Line 3’s most serious immediate impacts will be on Indigenous peoples and their lands and waters along the line.

“But the increasing climate threats to Minnesota — and the planet — will be exponentially exacerbated by this pipeline. In short, Line 3 is a climate time bomb.”

LaDuke added: “Tar sands is the dirtiest and most expensive oil on the planet to extract, and this Line 3 would add the equivalent emissions of 50 coal-fired power plants.

“It’s up to President Biden to continue with the country’s renewable energy agenda and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

“After his action to halt Keystone XL, stopping Line 3 is essential.”
