‘My goal was to support my mother through her battle with cancer by going vegan with her and, in turn, it helped me as well. And I feel really good’

Last week, R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan shared a photo on Instagram to promote her upcoming single- Lost One – and it revealed her reported 50lb weight loss.

While the iconic singer’s picture showcasing her drastic transformation has garnered 149000 likes, it has also sparked a debate over her new slimmer physique.

Although many of her followers complimented the singer, she was also called out by some critics who said she looked “sickly.”

‘Ain’t skinny’

In response, the singer took to her Instagram Story, to share a message with her fans and address the criticism she had received.

The 33-year-old wrote that she isn’t as “skinny” as she looks in the photo and her new 180-pound frame is not an attempt to look thin but is due in part to her implementing some lifestyle changes, such as going vegan, in support of her mother, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

“Last week some people dragged me saying I look sickly. I’m honestly a size 12. 180 lbs,” she wrote.

“There’s nothing skinny abt me but my neck. I’m 5’8 however, so I sometimes photograph a little leaner than I am. But I ain’t skinny and that was never my goal.”

“My goal was to support my mother through her battle with cancer by going vegan with her and, in turn, it helped me as well. And I feel really good,” she added.

“I have a lot of things to work on in my journey and I’m not nearly the model for health and fitness…But I’m trying. And I’ll continue to do so with my momma! Bless y’all. Love y’all.”

 Healthy plant-based living

While the vegan diet has helped Sullivan shed excess weight, numerous studies have extolled the benefits of following a plant-based lifestyle for prevention of diseases and better health.

In fact, the World Health Organization branded processed meat as carcinogenic after numerous studies highlighted the association of cancer and meat consumption.

A meta-study review that compiled the findings of 15 studies involving more than 1.2 million subjects showed that those who ate more animal meat products had a nine percent increased risk compared to those who ate little.
