The Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving has made donations to several food banks and charities across New York in a bid to help the ones hit hard by the ongoing pandemic.
According to Johns Hopkins University’s running tally, declared coronavirus cases across the US have jumped to 189,510 with 4,076 deaths at the time of writing.
The pandemic has already killed more than 1,700 New Yorkers and it is predicted that up to 200,000 New Yorkers will die from COVID-19 if the government is unable to contain the spread soon.
Amidst the growing medical emergency, a number of people have stepped up to volunteer and do their bit in tackling the crisis.
Kyrie Irving for his part donated 200,000 vegan Beyond Burgers to the New York City food bank, the largest hunger relief nonprofit organization.
Earlier the star guard launched the Share A Meal campaign with Feed America and Lineage Logistics to help “marginalized communities get the food resources they require during this time.”
He also donated $323,000 to feed America as part of his commitment to the feeding campaign and partnered with City Harvest NYC to distribute 250,000 meals to the vulnerable across NY city.
“Seeing the effects of COVID-19 reach our loved ones, our schools, our jobs, and access to food has really impacted me,” he wrote in an Instagram post.
The six-time All-Star also urged his 13.9 million followers to join him in helping raise more funds for his Share A Meal campaign. “I am asking my fans, friends, family and partners to join me in helping our communities by donating at the link in my bio.
“Thank you to everyone on the front line working to keep all of us safe, healthy, and fed. Together we can change the world one small gesture at a time. “
Vegan Irving
Irving turned vegan in 2017 after watching the documentary- What The Health and has since advocated a plant based lifestyle.
Later he starred in Beyond Meat’s “Go Beyond” campaign and went to become an ambassador and investor in the plant-based meat startup.
