“There are certain injustices that I see that moves me so to a point that I can’t keep quiet about it.

Singer Leona Lewis has come out in support of a UK fur ban calling the trade “unspeakably cruel and utterly devoid of respect for animals.”

The 35- year old, who rose to fame after winning the X Factor in 2006, has also joined Mirror’s Fur Free Britain in a bid to make the country fur free.

While the region has had a ban on the production of fur since 2000, it is still legal to import the material.

‘Do the right thing’

Speaking at a parliamentary event organised by Humane Society International/UK, Lewis said: “We cannot call ourselves a nation of animal lovers for as long as we allow foxes, mink and other animals to lead miserable lives and painful deaths for fur that is sold on our shores.

“Britain took a world leading stance against such cruelty when we banned fur farming.

“I dearly would love to see Britain lead the world again by banning the sale of fur too. We look now to the Government to do the right thing.”

Wearing fur is ‘so cruel and outdated’

The British singer appeared on the cover of the Autumn/Winter 2020 issue of Rollacoaster Magazine and discussed her animal welfare and sustainability activism in the interview.

Expressing her disgust towards those who still advocate wearing fur, she said: “I’ve always been anti-fur, I think it’s so cruel and outdated.

“I think anyone who can see a protest like that and not see the humanity of it all, has no compassion and I think it’s vile.

“I’ve been involved in a lot of campaigns and animal rights, but fur is the one thing that I think is the most horrendous side of the whole animal welfare issue.”

‘Can’t keep quiet’

She added she has a sensitive personality and cannot possibly remain silent when she feels strongly about certain injustices.

The multi-platinum selling artist said: “If you have a platform where you can speak out about wrongness in the world, I feel like it would be a waste not to.

“It depends what issues upset you or you feel need to be brought to light. With the platform I’ve earned, there are certain injustices that I see that moves me so to a point that I can’t keep quiet about it.

“I definitely am a very sensitive person and when I see things happening that is impacting my fellow people around me it hurts my heart…”

The iconic singer is a trustee at Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, a 53-acre, 500-animal UK rescue sanctuary.

New eco-friendly venture

Lewis also shared her works on being sustainable as she detailed her Eco Café business Coffee + Plants.

She said: “I always kind of been someone who wants to explore lots of different sides of myself. This one particular venture I wanted to do is like an Eco Café [Coffee + Plants], so every 100 cups of coffee we sell, we plant a tree.

“Everything is recyclable, we’re all plant-based and there’s no dairy. The cafe is surrounded with plants that sustain us and clean our oxygen.”
