London has been named the most vegan-friendly city globally, according to an annual ranking survey.
This is the second time in a row that UK’s capital retains its most vegan-friendly title.
HappyCow is apparently the largest vegan and vegetarian restaurant guide in the world and the portal surveyed options in more than 180 countries to put together its top 10 rankings for the year.
The online hub based its rankings on 3 criteria: the number of vegan outlets in a five-mile radius within the most vegan-restaurant-dense area in each city; the number of restaurants serving vegetarian or vegan menu options in the same five-mile radius; and HappyCow’s view on the overall vegan-friendliness of each city.
London now boasts of 152 vegan restaurants including plant-based versions of a chicken shop, sushi bar and pizzerias. It was also the first city on HappyCow’s list to hit 100 vegan outlets in 2017.
HappyCow listed names of some popular eateries including PickyWops, Brighton transplant Purezza, and Young Vegans Pizza Shop (formerly Death By Pizza). It added The Vurger Co for its healthy plant-based burgers with amazing sides and shakes and The Temple of Seitan for its signature fried plant-based chicken and mac & cheese.
According to HappyCow, Vida Bakery and Crosstown Doughnuts Vegan serve the tastiest vegan desserts and Yorica has an amazing selection of vegan ice cream.
“The word vegan can be seen all over the city, on the streets and in the tube stations, and there are so many vegan events in London now that it can be a challenge to keep up,” said HappyCow.
“Veganism continues to become a mainstream lifestyle in London and this city takes veganism to a new level.”
In a similar survey, PETA also named London as most vegetarian-friendly city in the world.
“We have a noble history of vegetarianism, so it is great news to be crowned the best city on Earth to enjoy meat-free nosh,” said former London Mayor Boris Johnson.
A survey conducted by The Vegan Society indicated that around 600,000 Britons (equivalent to 1.16 percent of the population) prefer a plant-based diet and the number of people switching over has quadrupled between 2014 and 2019.
The other cities that made the top 10 list include:
- New York, U.S.
- Berlin, Germany
- Los Angeles, U.S.
- Toronto, Canada
- Warsaw, Poland
- Portland, U.S.
- Bangkok, Thailand
- Tel Aviv, Israel
- Prague, Czech Republic
