“The steps we are announcing are very much a reflection of the voices of the communities we engage with and our team’s commitment to play a key role in creating a more sustainable mother earth.”

Moose Knuckles, a Montreal-based luxury outerwear and sportswear brand, has pledged to stop using fur by the end of 2022.

It’s part of the company’s newly launched sustainability program which ‘commits the company to innovation and leadership across six impact streams’ addressing carbon emissions, material usage, circularity, and biodiversity by 2025.

“Our number one objective has always been about creating exceptional, handcrafted products that provide unmatched warmth without sacrificing style,” co-CEO Noah Stern said.

“The steps we are announcing are very much a reflection of the voices of the communities we engage with and our team’s commitment to play a key role in creating a more sustainable mother earth.”

Fur-free brands

Moose Knuckles is the latest to join a slew of other luxury brands and fashion labels that have already nixed fur from their designs.

Just this week luxury department store Neiman Marcus announced it is ditching fur by 2023.

Holt Renfrew, a leading Canadian department store also revealed plans to stop selling animal fur and exotic skins by the end of 2021.

Last month, Canadian winter clothing manufacturer Canada Goose pledged to stop buying and using fur by 2022.

Gucci, Michael Kors Holdings Ltd. (which owns Jimmy Choo and Versace),  Global Brands Group, (which owns Aquatalia and licenses more than a dozen other brands), Coach, Chanel, Prada, Burberry, and Giorgio Armani are other fashion labels that have already made similar commitments to phase out fur from their designs.

‘Banner week for grassroots activists’

Vegan charity PETA, which has been campaigning against the use of this cruelly obtained fabric welcomed the news.

Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said: The end of fur is nigh, as almost every retailer with any business sense, from Canada Goose to Neiman Marcus to Moose Knuckles, is ending the sale of scraps of tormented animals’ fur, realizing that no one with a heart will buy it anymore.

“This is a banner week for grassroots activists and PETA, which pushed all these brands to go fur-free, and can now see the death of the fur industry right around the corner.”
