Morrisons has announced a giant vegan sausage roll tapping on the growing popularity of plant-based alternative meat.
After Greggs swept the market with its plant-based sausage roll, Morrisons has followed suit with a whopper sized foot long vegan roll.
The roll weighs 466 grams, almost four times the weight of normal sized roll. It’s also double the length.
The pastry replaces meat with soya mince blended with an assortment of spices and herbs and wrapped in a golden dairy-free casing.
The rolls will be freshly baked in store by Morrisons Market Street bakers and will be served at Morrisons pie counters for £1 each.
Pleased with their creation, Morrisons Pie Expert Steven Halford said in a statement: “Our original foot long sausage roll caught the imagination of the nation so we’ve worked hard to make sure everyone – including vegans – can now tuck into our creation.
“Sharing is optional,” he added tongue in cheek.
Vegan products at Morrisons
The vegan giant roll follows the vegan “Corn-ish” pasty that Morrisons launched earlier this year. The roll came wrapped in a flaky plant-based puff pastry with a seasoned potato, swede and onion filling inside.
Last month, the chain announced a special festive plant-based range for Christmas featuring an assortment of tasty vegan options including a vegan version of the staple Christmas pigs in blankets, Katsu Croquettes, Korean Jackfruit Bao Buns, and a Best Vegetable Layered Tart.
In April, Tesco launched ready-to-go vegan sausage rolls in its stores, whereas UK supermarket Iceland launched a pack of six vegan sausages for £2 last month.
