Carnation has developed a plant-based version of is classic condensed milk for vegans to enjoy desserts without ‘having to compromise on taste, texture, or appearance’
Swiss food giant Nestlé is set to release a vegan version of its iconic Carnation condensed milk in the UK this September.
The new product is made with a blend of oat and rice flour and can be used in a variety of sweet caramel-based desserts, pies, pastries and cakes.
Vittoria Simms, Nestlé Marketing Lead for Dairy Brands UK, told The Grocer that it took the company over 18 months to develop and perfect the recipe.
‘No compromise’
“It has been a challenge for vegans to find suitable alternatives to make dairy or caramel-based sweets treats or desserts, without having to compromise on taste, texture, or appearance,” Simms said.
The vegan product is priced slightly more at £2.19 for a 370g tin compared to £1.70 for a 397g tin of the standard version.
While the product will first roll out in Ocado in September, Tesco and Morrisons supermarkets will stock the products from October.
Plant-based Nestlé
The new condensed milk is just one of the latest plant-based offerings of the food giant. Yesterday, Nestlé also unveiled a new range of YES! Plant Protein bars, which the company said is ‘good for you and for the environment.’
The bars are made using wholesome ingredients and are high in fiber, gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians.
Each bar is drizzled with real dark chocolate made from sustainably sourced cocoa certified by the Rainforest Alliance and packs in at least 10 grams of plant protein from peas and nuts for power-packed nutrition.
Earlier, this month, Nestlé and Starbucks launched two vegan creamers in the US as part of a global coffee alliance between the two companies formed in 2018 to bring customers exciting new ways to enjoy coffee at-home.
