‘I salute the volunteer army helping to feed the most vulnerable as part of the Food For London Now appeal’

Olivia Colman recently volunteered to help charity Made in Hackney, who is providing 500 emergency meals per day to people in need during the lockdown.

The English actor visited the charity and assisted in preparing 100 ‘rainbow veg tagines with crusty bread pieces and pearl barley’.

She then went around to do some non-contact deliveries around the London borough of Hackney with the company’s delivery staff.

“Olivia Colman came to visit our Emergency Meal service! It’s not every day an award-winning movie star visits your charity program and is not only lovely but rolls up her sleeves and gets stuck in,” Made In Hackney captioned a photo of Colman delivering meals on Instagram.

The Queen – sorry Olivia Colman – came to visit our Emergency Meal service! ? . Its not every day an award winning movie star visits your charity programme & is not only lovely but rolls up her sleeves and gets stuck in! ?? . Accompanied by @mrevgenylebedev & a team from the @evening.standard she first visited @thefelixproject food depot then came to us to make over 100 meals with the @angelina.dalston team. ? . She then joined our cargo riders, accompanying Clarence & Baba to do some non-contact deliveries around Hackney. ???? . Meal recipient Lynn who attended MIH cookery classes in pre-COVID times, was brilliant when the food arrived. She rubbed her eyes and said, "I've not got my glasses on but you look just like Olivia Colman." Classic. ? . The charity added that an unsuspecting recipient couldn’t believe Colman was out delivering meals and exclaimed “I’ve not got my glasses on but you look just like Olivia Colman.”

Rising to the challenge

Describing the experience, Colman, in a piece for Evening Standard, wrote: “In the midst of this deadly virus and economic crash, it is cheering to see how quickly and efficiently so many people are rising to the challenge.

“The organisations that donate food, volunteers that transport it and the charities that transform it into fresh meals — I salute you.

“What I witnessed yesterday — the dedicated, kind community-led work of The Felix Project and Made in Hackney — has convinced me there is indeed great cause to be hopeful.”
