Fast food chain Popeyes is launching its first-ever vegan burger.
The American brand – well-known for its fried chicken- has created the new Creole Red Bean Sandwich, using a proprietary blend of breaded and fried red bean patty, lettuce, and tomato on a Brioche bun.
It also features the brand’s iconic, Louisiana-style fixings including a Creole-inspired sauce made with garlic, peppers, onion, tomato, and parsley.
The new burger will be launched in Popeyes’ first-ever UK location.
The restaurant is set to open on 20 November in Westfield Stratford, London. Popeyes plans to add an additional 350 new locations in the UK in the next 10 years.
Growing demand for plant-based foods
Popeyes’ new plant-based burger comes at a time when demand for ethical choices is growing in the UK.
According to food delivery service Deliveroo, plant-based dining is now one of the fastest-growing categories on its platform.
It added that since World Vegan Month last year, orders of fully plant-based dishes on the platform across the UK have risen by a massive 105% year on year.
Furthermore, the people of Brighton, Bristol and Leeds ordered the most vegan food on the platform (as a proportion of their total orders).
Growing fast food vegan options
As the plant-based food market booms globally, a growing number of fast-food chains are releasing vegan alternatives to cash in on the changing food landscape.
McDonald’s launched its vegan McPlant burger in the UK for the first time in October.
Meanwhile, Burger King opened its first fully vegetarian restaurant in Madrid, Spain last month.
The pop-up on popular Paseo el Prado street has been rebranded as Vurger King and will exclusively serve vegetarian items for an entire month.
The menu includes a plant-based Whopper, vegan chicken nuggets and a new plant-based option called the Long Vegetal featuring “meat” from The Vegetarian Butcher.
