Several vegans have pledged to boycott the brand after it added milk to some of its flavours.
Pringles is receiving heavy criticism after changing the product formulation for some of its flavours
This move now makes some of the crisps such as Original, Paprika, Smokey Bacon, Sweet Chilli, and Texas BBQ Sauce unsuitable for vegans.
The brand recently updated its ingredient list to inform customers that some Pringles flavours now contain a small amount of milk.
According to the brand, ‘this change was intended to standardise the recipe across our range to assist with allergen control in the food production process and reduce time between flavour changeovers in our factories.’
It added that fewer disruptions to the production lines would also help them to reach their food waste targets.
Pringles no longer vegan-friendly
The response sparked fury online, with hundreds of vegans taking to Pringles’ Instagram to express their upset.
“What a load of shit. It’s (milk) one of the biggest allergens so you add it back in? And you had the absolute audacity to mention sustainability as a reason for adding it back in, when animal agriculture & the dairy industry are driving the climate crisis an insane amount. I’m actually embarrassed for you,” one user wrote slamming the brand.
“Are you really trying to sell ‘sustainability’ to us whilst adding in an allergen that’s very well known for being ecologically unsustainable. Get the PR team to try again because it makes no sense,” added another.
“Then take milk out of all the range ?! Standardise the recipe and no changeovers huh ?!What a pile of crap explanation,” a third wrote.
Backlash
Moreover, several vegans vowed to boycott the brand, and a slew of comments accused Pringles of ‘going backwards’.
One user asked: “Why is Pringles REGRESSING at a time of catastrophic weather conditions all over the globe?
“While most food companies are making moves to be more animal, health, and climate change friendly, Pringles has taken the idiotic step of adding unnecessary dairy to their products. I definitely won’t be buying any more!”
