“Attitudes toward fur have shifted dramatically and most designers have discontinued it,” the charity’s senior VP said.
Sarah Jessica Parker has been urged to ditch fur as news of HBO Max’s upcoming “Sex and the City” reboot surfaces.
Vegan charity PETA has written to Parker – who is an executive producer on the new series – to urge her to exclude real fur from the show’s wardrobe department and showcase modern, animal-free fashion.
“Since the series ended in 2004, attitudes toward fur have shifted dramatically and most designers have discontinued it,” writes PETA Senior Vice president Dan Mathews.
“Just last week, The New York Times ran an obituary for fur, following the culling of millions of minks because of mounting cases of COVID-19 transmission between them and humans.
“As you may know, this has led to the outbreak of a new and more contagious mutant strain of the novel coronavirus.
“What we would love to hear is that you embrace the spirit of this month’s Vogue Italia, which is dedicated to animals and calls on the fashion world to move away not just from fur but also from all cruelly obtained, animal-derived materials.”
Doomed
In recent years the global fur industry has spiralled downwards for a number of reasons, including consumers’ growing aversion for the cruelly obtained material, fashion runways, and designer labels such as Gucci, Chanel, Versace, Armani, Coach, and Prada, among others implementing fur bans, and cities, states, and countries around the world applying sanctions on the trade.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has further pinned the strapped industry after the virus outbreak on mink fur farms in the Netherlands, Spain, the United States, and Denmark led to a mass culling of mink to contain the contagion.
In addition, now, with a plethora of luxurious, realistic-looking fur-free alternatives flooding the market, animal-rights groups believe that signs for the imminent downfall of the global fur industry have finally manifested.
