The 50-year-old celebrity recently turned vegan after being made aware of the realities of the dairy and meat industries.

Comedian, actor, and recently turned vegan Sarah Silverman says healthy food is a human right and should be made accessible to everyone.

The 50-year-old entertainer made the comments on a recent episode of her “The Sarah Silverman Podcast.”

Silverman, who revealed that her transition to a vegan diet, is “going well” said: “You know, one thing that bothers me is that to have a vegan diet or just a healthy’ whole food diet doesn’t seem to be accessible to all people. Again, it comes back to that. Shouldn’t food be a right? Like healthy food?”

She added that if the government was made in charge of people’s healthcare then it would encourage people to have healthy diets and make healthy food accessible to everyone in order to save money.

“It would just be nice if healthy food was more accessible to all people. Access, access,” she told her listeners.

Silverman further said that people also can take care of their health and make smarter choices.

“I’ll be in line at 7-11 or something and I’ll see a kid getting like Doritos and a Mountain Dew…I go ‘Really, there’s a bag of almonds here for the same price and it’s gonna fill you up and it’s gonna be delicious.”

Silverman goes vegan

Silverman, who has been vegetarian since the age of seven, was recently urged to go vegan when a caller left her a voicemail explaining that the dairy and meat industries are inherently interconnected.

She grappled with the caller’s information on how calves are separated from their mothers in order to provide milk for human consumption. He also called on Silverman’s environmental interests, stating that cows account for 10% of all greenhouse gases produced.

“He’s right,” Silverman, said repeatedly, after listening to the voicemail.

“That’s what I needed. I can’t unring this bell of information … I’m going to try to go vegan.”

She also shared that she recently stopped eating eggs before adding: “I think you’ve just witnessed me get officially grossed out and not want to be a part of this [the dairy industry] anymore. And the environment thing is so real. The cows, that’s such a giant [carbon] footprint.”
