Rudy’s Vegan Butcher, which opened on World Vegan Day, has expanded its UK presence following roaring success.

The UK’s first vegan butcher has opened a second location inside Selfridges.

Rudy’s Vegan Butcher’s wide range of vegan meat is now available at the exclusive department’s famous food hall.

The London-based butcher also has a popular casual restaurant named Rudy’s Dirty Vegan Diner in Camden.

Taking to Instagram to announce the second location, Rudy’s wrote: “Vegan butcher has officially opened at Selfridges Food.

“For the first week, to celebrate, we are giving one of our official Vegan Butcher Tote-bags with any purchase.

“Come visit us and make sure to tag us in your pictures. We see you!”

Rudy’s Vegan Butcher

Rudy’s has seen a tremendous demand for its vegan offerings, which include smoked ham, salami de Provence, pepperoni, and pastrami along with meat-free alternatives to ribs, lobster salad, bacon, burgers, chicken liver pate, and more.

The plant-butcher concept proved so popular that Rudy’s which opened last November on World Vegan Day attracted long queues down the street and sold out its entire stock on its very first day.

“Our aim has always been to start a conversation about the bigger picture of veganism, as well as get customers excited for Rudy’s,” Ruth Mumma, the co-founder of Rudy’s told Vegconomist.

“Our concept and our food is both a celebration and education of all things vegan.”

She added: “The appetite for veganism is out there, and I think the ‘flexitarian’ approach to living has become much more popular recently, meaning that people might not be fully plant-based just yet but they are choosing more vegan options over meat. We are seeing a slower but more permanent change of attitude across a larger number of people.”

Vegan butchers X Selfridges

Rudy’s isn’t the only plant-based butcher to have debuted in the iconic department store.

Artisan meat replacement brand Sgaia also launched into Selfridge stores across the UK including London, Birmingham, and Manchester.

This launch will allow consumers to try premium plant-based cuts including streaky ‘bacon’ and vegan ‘steaks’ nationwide.

Naysayers

While there is no denying the burgeoning trend of vegan food and plant-based butchers, the popularity has riled naysayers such as TV host Piers Morgan, who was not too pleased when Rudy’s launched its first vegan butcher shop.

He posted a picture of the shop on his Instagram and captioned the post: “What fresh hell is this? Utterly ridiculous.”
