“The future of fashion lies in materials that no animal had to suffer or die for.”
Valentino has pledged to ditch angora wool from all future collections.
The announcement comes after vegan charity PETA met with Valentino to discuss its angora policy.
The company also recently committed to a fur-free policy coming into effect in 2022, as part of its ‘redefining’ and becoming a more eco-friendly brand.
The luxury Italian designer is the latest fashion house to join hundreds of other top brands – including Burberry, Chloé, Gucci, Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, and Elisabetta Franchi – that have taken a stand against fur and angora.
Angora
According to PETA, its investigation exposed angora farms in China, since 90% of the fibre comes from this country, where there are no penalties for the abuse of animals on farms and no standards to regulate their treatment.
The charity said its investigators found that ‘most rabbits used for angora are kept in cramped, filthy cages surrounded by their own waste’.
They added the animals are routinely stretched across boards before their fur is torn out by sharp tools while they helplessly scream in pain and desperately try to escape.
They typically endure this agony every three months, the charity further added.
‘Cruelty-free fashion’
Yvonne Taylor, PETA Director of Corporate Projects, welcomed the announcement and said: “The future of fashion lies in materials that no animal had to suffer or die for.
“We applaud Valentino’s decision to continue on its path towards cruelty-free fashion by eliminating alpaca, fur, and now angora from its collections and encourage other brands to follow its lead.”
