The new, patented, award-winning, potato-based dairy alternative is ‘deliciously creamy, perfectly foamy, super–sustainable, versatile’, and available in three flavours.
Vegan dairy brand DUG, created by Veg of Lund, has launched what it describes as the world’s first-ever plant-based milk made from potatoes.
The Swedish-based food innovator developed its latest milk alternative with Professor Eva Tornberg at Lund University.
The delicious, creamy and vegan-friendly plant-based drink is available in three flavours — Original, Unsweetened, and Barista.
Dug’s formulation contains a potato base, pea protein, maltodextrin, chicory fibre, rapeseed oil, and natural flavourings. It is free from added sugar, gluten, lactose and soya while being fortified with vitamins including D, B12 and folic acid.
The brand is already available in Sweden and has just launched in the UK through Amazon.
Dug more sustainable than oats and almonds
According to the company, Dug drinks have a really low climate footprint.
It is because the potato is one of the most environmentally- friendly and sustainable crops to grow.
It uses just half the amount of land needed for oats. Moreover, it uses a whopping 56 times less water in comparison to almonds.
Additionally, the creamy, neutral taste and allergy-friendliness of potatoes make them a great alternative to dairy milk.
It is also highly versatile and can be used to cook, bake and even create the perfect foam for lattes.
Thomas Olander is the CEO of Veg of Lund. He said: “We have a good product that we are proud of.
“Our choice to use potatoes as a base means that we have a super-sustainable drink. Potatoes don’t need much to grow at all, making them a super-sustainable crop compared to others like soybeans, almonds or oats. Not to mention dairy products.”
World Food Innovation Awards 2021
DUG recently won an award for Best Allergy Friendly Product at the World Food Innovation Awards 2021.
“DUG, our new, patented, award-winning, potato-based dairy alternative, ticks all the boxes: deliciously creamy, perfectly foamy, super–sustainable, and versatile, performing just as well in hot drinks as it does in cooking and in baking,” the company said in a statement.
