This year Subway finally added a vegan sub to its menu. The new sandwich features a vegan patty made from red pepper, spicy chilli, garlic and red onion – but how did it hold up in the Totally Vegan Buzz taste test?
The new sandwich comes with a choice of the fast food chain’s salad, and can even be combined with the new vegan aioli or other plant-based options of BBQ, sweet chilli or hot chilli.

The new vegan options start at £3.80, but in TVB’s hometown of Brighton, UK the half-foot sub was priced at £4.25.
‘I’d rather have four Greggs vegan sausage rolls’

Editor Oli Gross: “The vegan aioli is nice but the helping needs to be far more generous. The sandwich is quite dry and the salad is watery.
“The patty is quite bland and not very filling. Overall the meal is lacking in any distinctive spices or flavours and the only option to make it a passable meal is to drown it in sauce.
“Subway needs to up its game and add a genuine meat alternative to keep up with its competitors. Vegans won’t settle for anything less anymore!
“For the same price I would rather eat four Greggs vegan sausage rolls.”

‘Definitely ask for more aioli!’

Michelle von Mandel, social media: “A bit dry, but not bad for a chain vegan option.
“I liked the bread with chillies in it and it’s definitely worth adding jalapenos.
“I also would definitely recommend asking for extra aioli.”

‘Woah! £4.25 is too much’

Co-founder Owais Amiri: “Woah! £4.25 is too much. Would I eat it again though? Yes, but it needs more chilli to add flavour.
“It’s a decent sandwich but it lacks a kick to take it to the next level. Some spices would massively improve things.”

‘Decent lunch!’

Co-founder Layla Brook: “I’m not a big fan of the bread, but I like what’s inside.
“It’s a decent lunch with a good vegan patty”
