Wendy’s has launched a vegan- Plantiful Burger at locations in Canada but is yet to make a formal announcement.
Staying true to the brand’s CEO’s comment: “We want to do it the Wendy’s way. Something that is unique to Wendy’s, the fast-food chain has silently debuted a new vegan-friendly Plantiful Burger at certain Canadian stores with only a teaser of an advertisement hinting at a launch.
Rather than making an official announcement or adding details to the website, Wendy’s set up outdoor advertisements in Toronto, which showed a meaty burger captioned: “Where’s the beef? Not here.”
The Plantiful Burger includes an all-vegan patty made with pea protein, along with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, plus dairy-based mayonnaise and cheese.
A Wendy’s staff informed Compassion Over Killing-an animal welfare NGO- that the burger contains egg.
It is not clear, whether the egg is an optional ingredient or a raw material used in the burger itself.
Wendy’s has also not divulged whether this new burger is a test run or a permanent menu item.
Vegan Wendy’s
The fast food chain has introduced vegan options in the past. It first launched a black bean burger in 2015, which was subsequently discontinued.
Recently, Lana Weidgenant, a college student, launched a petition urging the fast-food chain to catch up with the times and expand its menu with vegan varieties.
Her petition received more than 27,000 signatures.
During the company’s 2019 second-quarter earnings call, CEO Todd Penegor fielding questions about the company’s stance on plant-based protein said: “Clearly there is growth out there in plant-based proteins and we believe that it is a trend that will be here to stay.
“We’re taking a hard look at what the options would be for us at the restaurant.”
