“Teriyaki Veg arrives to unite people with different food preferences, promote culinary innovation with vegetable proteins and correctly respond to a market that is growing steadily in our country.”

Global sandwich chain Subway has launched its first-ever vegan sandwich in the Mexican market.

It is the result of a collaboration with EligeVeg (ChooseVeg), an organization managed by the nonprofit Mercy For Animals.

The Teriyaki Veg Footlong features Subway’s specially developed vegan chicken made from a blend of peas, rice, and broad beans and doused in the chain’s beloved teriyaki sauce.

The sandwich is fully customizable and can be ordered with a choice of toppings and condiments.

The fast-food chain has rolled out the sandwich across all of its 780 locations.

‘Foray into the plant-based movement’

“We are proud to present our new Teriyaki Veg, a unique option on the market that will surely surprise and please our guests, not only those who follow a plant-based diet but all those who want to try a different and delicious [option] in the quick-service restaurant industry,” Vivian Rodal, marketing director of Subway Mexico, said.

Mariana Issa, senior manager of EligeVeg, added: “Teriyaki Veg arrives to unite people with different food preferences, promote culinary innovation with vegetable proteins and correctly respond to a market that is growing steadily in our country.

“For EligeVeg, it has been a great pleasure to collaborate with Subway by accompanying it on its foray into the plant-based movement.”

Vegan Subway options globally

The Teriyaki Veg rollout in Mexico is just the latest of Subway’s exploration of vegan options in various countries. The same sandwich has already debuted in Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

Subway UK even launched the Meatless Meatball Marinara, a fully vegan sandwich featuring plant-based protein and vegan cheese.

Additionally, it added the T.L.C. (Tastes Like Chicken) Sub, made with soy-based vegan chicken and topped with Violife vegan cheese slices.

In Singapore, it launched a vegan chicken patty with Nestlé-owned foodservice arm Harvest Gourmet.

In the US, the fast-food chain offers vegan bread, vegetables, soups, and chips. The Veggie Delite sandwich made with assorted vegetables, is also a popular choice among plant-based eaters.
