“Vegan beauty is a critical next step in our endeavor to make The Body Shop a destination for ethically-minded customers.”

Natura &Co’s The Body Shop has announced that it is going to reformulate its entire product range to make it 100% vegan by the end of 2023.

While around 60% of The Body Shop’s products are already vegan-friendly, some formulations include honey, beeswax, lanolin, and shellac.

The brand, which has always championed cruelty-free cosmetics will also become the first global beauty brand to have its entire product portfolio certified by the Vegan Society.

The announcement follows an earlier statement where the British cosmetics and beauty company revealed it was ‘moving away from using any animal-derived products’.

As part of that goal, the brand has started expanding its vegan range. Earlier this year, it rolled out new vegan certified body butters made with 95% ingredients of natural origin and packed in 100% recycled plastic tubs.

The beauty brand also reformulated its iconic White Musk fragrance – which has been free of animal testing since its launch in 1981 – by removing animal ingredients and getting the product registered with The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark.

‘Destination for ethically-minded customers’

“Our decision to go 100% vegan is a natural next step for The Body Shop,” Lionel Thoreau, Global Brand Director, The Body Shop told Global Cosmetic News

“Thanks to our founder Anita Roddick, we were the first beauty company to fight against animal testing in cosmetics, and the first major global beauty brand to use cruelty-free musk in our fragrances.

“Vegan beauty is a critical next step in our sustainability and environmental endeavors. This, along with our global refill and in-store recycling programmes makes The Body Shop a destination for ethically-minded customers.”

Eco-friendly

In addition, the Body Shop has also announced plans to roll-out refill stations across 500 UK stores this year so that customers can opt to refill their favourite products rather than buying them in new packaging as part of its sustained efforts to reduce plastic pollution.

The rollout is expected to be extended to a further 300 stores worldwide in 2022.

The Body Shop also offers a recycling option where customers can return their empty containers to stores to be recycled and this scheme will be extended to 800 stores in 14 markets by the end of 2021.
