Major food investor targets plant-based market in bid to sustainably feed 10 billion people by 2050

A leading food technology-focused investment firm has announced its support for four plant-based companies as part of its bid to transform food sustainability.

Blue Horizon Ventures has increased its focus on vegan businesses after securing shares in the vegan food and sustainability companies Algama Foods, Clara Foods, Human Food, and TIPA.  

“These are the first in many strategic investments we’ll be making in promising global plant-based food, cellular agriculture and sustainability-focused companies,” the company confirmed in a press release.

Blue Horizon Ventures is a food technology-focused venture capital fund established by serial entrepreneurs and investors Roger Lienhard and Michael Kleindl in 2018.

It was founded to promote a positive global impact on the environment, human health and animal welfare through innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship. 

The company wants to help solve the huge problem of being able to sustainably feed 10 billion people by 2050. It plans to invest into companies that create tech-driven, healthy and innovative plant-based products.

Blue Horizon has invested in:

TIPA

TIPA is an Israeli company that manufactures packaging solutions which are 100% biodegradable and compostable for the food and beverage industry.  

Blue Horizon Ventures co-led a $25 million Growth Round by investing $5 million into TIPA.  Kleindl will join TIPA as a board committee member.

Algama Foods

Algama, a French startup founded in 2015, aims to introducing microalgae into daily products – increasing protein content and nutritional value in a sustainable and natural way.

Blue Horizon Ventures invested €1.5 million into the company. Dr. Regina Hecker, Principal at the firm, will join the company’s Board.

Clara Foods

This San Francisco-based food startup leads the market in formulating, engineering, and manufacturing animal-free proteins as ingredients for the global food and beverage industry.

Blue Horizon Ventures invested in Clara’s mission with a co-investment of $1.5 million.

Human Food

Human Food is a UK-based next generation food startup, developing nutrition bars that contain the recommended daily portion of natural vitamins. The company’s mission is to develop high quality meal replacements with all-natural ingredients.

Blue Horizon Ventures invested £0.5 million (GBP) and Michael Kleindl, Co- Founder and Blue Horizon, will join the Human Food Board’s committee.
