National Trust launches vegan cream tea in 350 of its UK locations

The National Trust has introduced vegan cream tea in 350 locations across the UK to cater to the growing demand for dairy-free alternatives.

The National Trust is an independent charity that works for the environment and heritage conservation. It owns around 500 heritage properties across the UK including more than 350 historic houses, 160 gardens, 28 castles, and 60 pubs and attracts millions of visitors to each of its historic sites each year.

The conservation organization announced the launch of its new vegan cream tea scones by posting a recipe on its site before adding it to 350 of its café menus.

The vegan cream tea features a plain scone complete with oat milk-based clotted cream and jam.

The cafés also allow switching dairy milk with soya or oat milk for your tea.

Sharing the news on Facebook, the Trust wrote: “Introducing our new vegan cream tea. It includes everything you’d want in one of our home-made cream teas but made with plant-based ingredients, because scones are for everyone.

“You’ll find this new treat in the cafés at the places we care for and we’ll of course still be serving our traditional cream tea – even though your friends might want a bite of this one. All you’ll need to worry about is whether to go jam or cream first.”

Commenting on the need to introduce vegan varieties, Development Chef Rebecca Janaway said: “We are welcoming more people than ever before to the places we care for who have a variety of tastes and dietary needs, and our menu needs to reflect that.

“We know from talking with visitors who are vegan that they are looking for more choice and that they struggle to find classic British comfort food, and what could be more classic than the cream tea.”

Head chef at Tyntesfield, Emma Horsley said: “It’s great to be able to extend the range of seasonal and locally sourced food to the vegan cream tea. It shows how the National Trust is meeting customer demand…”

The National Trust’s café menus offer a savoury assortment of vegan dishes that include coronation cauliflower, couscous salad, mixed bean chilli, mushroom and thyme roll, red lentil cottage pie, red Thai spiced squash soup, and vegetable tagine.

The vegan cream introduction was hailed by hundreds of vegans and people looking for dairy alternatives.

“Is this in every NT cafe? Very excited for my next road trip now,” wrote one user.

“That’s great news! I’m not vegan, but I am dairy intolerant. So now I can have a cream tea with everyone else ??,” commented another

“??? Best news ever!” added a third.
