More people than ever are going vegan this month after plant-based charity challenge Veganuary saw explosive popularity in the lead-up to 2019.

In the last Sunday of 2018 alone the charity saw 14,000 people pledging to go vegan in January 2019, and the company expects to hit 300,000 participants this year.

Veganuary has seen numbers skyrocket year-on-year. Since its inception in 2014, total participants have been:

  • January 2014: 3,300 participants
  • 2015: 12,800
  • 2016: 23,000
  • 2017: 59,500
  • 2018: 168,500

Simon Winch, chief executive of Veganuary, said: “Our research from our 2018 Veganuary Participants Survey suggests most are sticking with it, which is great news! 62% of respondents said they intended to stay vegan, of whom 82% said that going vegan was easier than they expected.

“This year we’re working hard to improve the quality of the support we provide to people after they finish their month trying vegan – to help those that want to stay vegan to continue their journey.”

Veganuary supports participants adapt to veganism with a vegan starter kit, recipes, meal plans, tips on eating out, special offers and nutrition through a 31-day email series. Community support via Facebook and other social channels is also available.
