Vegan fried chicken coming to KFC

Share

KFC plans to test plant-based chicken nuggets and boneless wings from Beyond Meat at an Atlanta restaurant and get its customers to review the meatless variant to its popular meat counterpart.

KFC, known for its fried chicken, will serve the six or 12-piece combo plant-based nugget meals for $6.49 and $8.49 and boneless wings for $6 and $12.

The fast-food chain is yet another food giant that wants to capture a sizeable share of the growing vegan market and is happy to tweak its menu to make it more wholesome and attractive to vegan diners and flexitarians looking to reduce meat consumption.

The restaurant brand wants to gauge the customer response before it decides to introduce the plant-based meal in other outlets or nationwide.

The alternative meat strategy has already reaped profits for other restaurant chains that have chosen to include plant meat from Beyond and Impossible.

Beyond Meat has partnered with sandwich chain Subway, Del Taco Restaurant Inc, Carl’s Jr, Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc and Restaurant Brand International’s Tim Hortons.

This furore over meat substitutes has boomed businesses for restaurant brands as well start ups like Beyond Meat.

Yum Brand Inc, the company that operates brands such as Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, and WingStreet worldwide excluding China had its stock price up by 26% this year.

Beyond Meat’s stock has shot up more than three-fold since it went public in May.
