In an era where consumer consciousness increasingly shapes corporate decisions, UK-based EasyJet Holidays has taken a significant step forward by eliminating tours and activities that exploit animals.
This bold move marks a substantial victory for animal rights and symbolizes a broader shift towards more compassionate travel choices, deeply resonating with vegan and ethical travelers worldwide.
EasyJet’s new policy prohibits the sale or promotion of marine parks, zoos, aquariums, animal rides, and performances (involving both domesticated and wild animals), effectively ending the promotion of any activity where captive animals are used for entertainment or tourist transport. This means that activities ranging from camel rides in Egypt to performing sea lions in Tenerife will no longer be featured by EasyJet. The decision follows thoughtful collaborations with leading animal protection organizations, underscoring a commitment to animal welfare that aligns with the values of their increasingly ethical clientele.
Additionally, this initiative is part of EasyJet’s broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments, which also include tackling food waste, switching to electric airport transfers, and educating hotel partners on the importance of animal welfare.
However, this step, although in the right direction, still falls short of positioning EasyJet, or any other airline, as a true leader in animal welfare and responsible travel. The airline’s in-flight meal offerings continue to include a significant variety of animal products, and it promotes holiday tours that may involve the use of animals for food or fiber (such as wool or leather). This discrepancy indicates that there remains a significant gap between the airline’s current practices and the ideal of fully ethical and responsible travel.
