‘The Clean Classics push us further in the right direction as a more sustainable choice to protect our home’

Adidas Originals is launching vegan revamps of its most iconic sneakers to tackle the issue of plastic waste.

The sports giant’s new Clean Classics collection is a range of court classic sneakers redesigned to reduce the brand’s impact on the environment.

The range includes the Superstar, Stan Smith, Continental 80, Top Ten, SC Premiere, Supercourt and Superstar Bold, all of which have been remade for 2020.

To make the announcement, the brand posted a video on Instagram, which states: “Plastic is a problem, innovation is our solution.

“With an aim to protect our future, we’ve made a commitment to end plastic waste. Our latest step brings us that much closer.

“Our classics made cleaner. Starting from scratch, we reworked our icons from the ground up.”

Vegan sneakers with high-performance recycled materials

These shoes are made with Primegreen- a series of high-performance recycled materials.

The uppers are made using 70% recycled materials whereas the soles are made from a more sustainable compound of 90% natural rubber, and 10% recycled rubber. This special BLOOM Foam is made using algae-harvesting technology that helps keep lakes clean.

The sock liners are made either from recycled OrthoLite (15% recycled OrthoLite, 6% Bio-oil and 5% recycled rubber) or cork, another renewable material that is both recyclable and non-toxic.

Even the leather of the upper has been cut in a manner that reduces unnecessary waste while offering a, literally, cleaner looking and more ergonomic silhouette.

The laces are made from paper and even the packaging uses boxes made from leftover stock cardboard that has been damaged or contains print errors.  The boxes will be cut efficiently, creating random print patterns that differ from box to box.

‘Push in the right direction’

In the video, Adidas said: “While the shoe alone won’t save the planet.

“The Clean Classics push us further in the right direction as a more sustainable choice to protect our home.”

The collection will retail from approximately $85 to $145 and will be available from September 10.
