‘The fruit is deliciously refreshing with a zesty citrus bite!’

Marks and Spencer has launched a special new hybrid fruit as Britons soak in the sunshine.

The new limited edition Limelon is a refreshing combination of a lime and a melon and is grown in Spain using a new seed variety.

Sharing the news on Instagram, the brand wrote: “Introducing the LIMELON!

“This incredible limited-edition hybrid fruit tastes like a juicy melon with a hint of lime – deliciously refreshing with a zesty citrus bite!

“Perfect for all the family, this zingy fruit is great served on its own, topped on yoghurt or added to savoury lunchtime salads.”

The new fruit is priced £3 ($5) and available at selected stores only.

Innovative hybrids

The strange fruit was first introduced back in 2012 and M&S has introduced several such fruit hybrids in the past to offer customers a unique twist to classic flavours.

Some of the variants created by the store include a Papple introduced in 2012, a cross between a pear and an apple. In 2015 the store launched the Plango, combining plum and mango. More recently, it launched the Banzzai, which is a cross between a satsuma, an orange, and a mandarin.

The Limelon is just one of the many products launched by M&S this summer.

In its latest post, the upscale retailer shared its ‘Lemonita’ recipe created by its Food development chef using preserved lemon paste.

The brand wrote: “ULTIMATE cocktail to enjoy in the sunshine using our Cook With M&S Preserved Lemon Paste.

“The paste is a super versatile ingredient to add an intense lemony flavour to both sweet and savoury dishes. Not only does it make a delicious meal, it also makes a mean margarita!”

Plant Kitchen range

The retailer has also been expanding its vegan Plant Kitchen range.

Earlier, this month M&S unveiled 2 vegan ice cream flavours: Plant Kitchen Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream, made with coconut cream, vanilla and Scottish raspberries and Plant Kitchen Chocolate Ice Cream, made with coconut cream and chocolate.

Last week, the high street retailer launched a new vegan brioche burger and hot dog buns – made from avocados. According to M&S, the ‘avocadough’ buns are the perfect partner to the brand’s Plant Kitchen BBQ food choices including Plant Kitchen Chorizo Puppies and Plant Kitchen No Beef Burgers.
