A survey to gauge customer attitude towards a vegan supermarket revealed that 56.4 % said they would definitely shop at the Vegan Fresco.

A 100 % vegan supermarket will be opening in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in January 2021, according to Het Parool.

Vegan Fresco, stocking plant-based products from all over Europe, will open its doors on Jan Evertsenstraat in mid-January.

According to founder, James Fresco, ‘it is time’ to have a specialised vegan and plant-based supermarket in Amsterdam since demand for vegan food is rising with more and more consumers adding plant-based protein into their diets for a combination of financial, environmental, humanitarian and health reasons.

 Fresco said he conducted a survey to gauge customer attitude towards a vegan supermarket and 56.4 % said they would definitely shop at the Vegan Fresco, while 40.1 % said they might.

More plant-based innovation

Fresco will initiate a crowdfunding campaign to fund part of the supermarket. Until then, the premises located across from an Albert Heijn supermarket, is being renovated.

Meanwhile, AAK, a Swedish-Danish producer of vegetable oils and fats, is opening a three-story vegan innovation center in Zaandijk, the Netherlands.

The Plant-Based Foods Global Center of Excellence will house two pilot plants, an analytical laboratory, a customer experience kitchen, and a sensory suite. 

‘Commitment to grow’

According to AAK, which has more than 140 years of experience working with vegetable oils and fats, the new platform will help companies create realistic tasting vegan meat with a proper texture, and “bite” as well.

Johan Westman, President and CEO, AAK Group, said in a statement, “Investing in this Plant-based Foods Global Center of Excellence reaffirms our commitment to grow our presence in this dynamic and fast-paced category.

“Acting as a knowledge center for our plant-based activities, we will develop and showcase our plant-based innovations to support customers across the world.”

The new vegan innovation centre located just outside of Amsterdam, will begin operations by the end of 2021.
