IKEA’s new indoor garden system gives you the freedom to grow your own vegetables all year round inside your home.
The furniture retailer has launched a hydroponic garden in an attempt to provide a more environmentally friendly product range.
Ikea’s KRYDDA/VÄXER indoor garden system allows anyone to grow fresh produce at home regardless of constraints of space, sunlight and fertile soil.
The system uses absorbent foam plugs which keep the seeds moist and help them sprout. The germinated seeds can then be transferred into a pot filled with pumice stones that help retain water.
The pots are then aligned on a solar lamp-equipped growing tray, which allows the plants to grow in the absence of sunlight. The tray has a built-in water sensor to ensure the plants are not over-watered.
This system helps plants grow in any space and across all seasons. The design is a collaboration with agricultural scientists in Sweden and is one of the most affordable options available on the market.
Ikea’s global reach allows it to spread its numerous sustainability initiatives worldwide.
The company has also tasted considerable success with its foray into the vegan sector. After launching plant-based meatballs and hot dogs, it recently announced its new VÄXT Burger– a vegan bun with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and egg-free mayo with an optional serving of dairy-free cheese across Canada.
