“Moocho aims to improve category perception and impress a market hungry for delicious, affordable and accessible plant-based options.”

This month, Moocho, a plant-based dairy brand, has released its newest vegan offering called dairy-free cheese Shreds.

Moocho, an offshoot of the iconic plant-based meat brand Tofurky Co., has rolled out its products at HEB stores across Texas.

The new Shreds are available in three flavors: Cheddar, Mozzarella, and Fiesta Blend.

The cheeses are made from coconut oil and fava bean protein, along with fermented cultures, and aging processes used in conventional cheese-making.

The Shreds are 100% vegan, non-GMO and gluten-free and are selling at $4.99 for an 8-ounce bag.

‘Filling the gap’

“Category research suggests shoppers see a gap in the plant-based cheese category where brands haven’t been able to provide a taste and texture that people crave,” said Jaime Athos, president, and CEO of Moocho and Tofurky in a company press release.

“Moocho aims to improve category perception and impress a market hungry for delicious, affordable and accessible plant-based options. As a category, we can do better now, with more ingredient options available.”

Bigger retail presence

According to Tofurky, the Moocho shredded cheese line was set to hit the market at the start of 2020, but, COVID-19 and unforeseen circumstances delayed the launch.

However, the brand is now looking for a bigger retail presence for its new products and is expected to expand to other retailers and regions in the coming months.

“Looking ahead to early 2021, we have many other retailers and food service players hungry to launch Moocho cheese with their audiences,” Athos told Veg News.

“Our goal entails quick national distribution to build growth and loyalty for dairy-free cheese that is similar to shopper purchase habits for dairy-free milks.”
